NEW DATA:Nutrition Assistance, SNAP usage, Points of Interest added to Map.

Data Layer Updates:

Map updates include expanded Nutrition Assistance data and updated points of interest for Maryland.

  • Nutrition Assistance – new and updated data about federal nutrition assistance programs. Recently we acquired new data from Maryland Hunger Solutions, one of our partner organizations. We previously had Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps) participation rates by county, but we have added participation rates by Zip Code, which will allow for more specific analysis. In addition, we added site locations for meal programs for low-income children at schools and locations to enroll in Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program benefits. These are the new layers, which are now displayed in this new category:
    • SNAP usage by Zip Code
    • Schools with 50% or more children who are eligible for free and reduced cost meals
    • Afterschool Meal Program Sites
    • WIC office locations
    • NOTE: The following existing data layers have been moved to this category:
      • SNAP Participation by County
      • SNAP Retailers
      • WIC Retailers
  • Points of Interest - updated points of interest note changes in addresses and expand lists statewide. Institutional sites in this list - schools and hospitals - will be expanded further this year, as we gather data and statistics about how these institutions are using local food. Here are the layers currently updated:
    • Hospitals
    • Public schools
    • Recreation centers
    • Senior centers

Map Wins GIS Award

As we mentioned in the last newsletter, the Maryland Food System Map received the Special Achievement in GIS award from Esri. Earlier this month, we attended the annual Esri International User Conference in San Diego to accept the award. We were honored to be one of an elite group of international GIS users. It was inspiring to explore new possibilities for GIS analyses. Using what we learned, we look forward to further refining our mapping project to better assess the food system here in Maryland and provide maps and information to you, our partners and followers.

All of these new data layers are defined in the "Glossary" in the "About the Map" section.
