Map Category: Nutrition Assistance

The percentage of each county population in Maryland that participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (previously known as food stamps), specifically among those that are eligible, i.e. they have an income low enough to qualify for benefits. Thus these rates show penetration of SNAP usage among those people eligible to redeem them, versus the total population.

The total population numbers are 2015 estimates from U.S. Census Bureau and the number of low income residents were derived from the 2009 to 2013 Multi-Year American Community Survey 5 year Estimates. The SNAP participant numbers are from State Fiscal Year 2015 and were obtained from the Maryland Department of Human Resources.
