Resources
There are a growing number of organizations and projects also using GIS and other mapping technology to examine different aspects of the food system. Here are some examples of those other projects. In addition, we’ve collected a number of resources about food systems, including other projects here at the Center for a Livable Future. - A supermarket access map from Esri, NAVTEQ
- Atlas of Nutritional Accessibility – a food access map created by Michigan State University for the Lansing area
- DC Food Finder locates grocery stores, free meals, emergency groceries, food for seniors and the homebound, farmers markets, markets accepting food stamps and WIC, community gardens and urban food projects, nutrition and cooking classes, and referrals in DC
- Food Stamp Usage, created by the NY Times, November 2009
- Limited Supermarket Access Map also by The Reinvestment Fund, a national leader in the financing of neighborhood revitalization
- Policy Map, by The Reinvestment Fund. A web-based Geographic Information System that captures data through custom demographic maps, tables, reports and an analysis tool.
- USDA Food Environment Atlas statistics in three broad categories: Food Choices, Health and Well-Being, and Community Characteristics
- Visualizing Accessibility II: Access to Food, a report by Marc Schlossberg, assistant professor of planning, public policy, and management at the University of Oregon

- Factory Farm Map, created by Food and Water Watch, shows factory farms which can be filtered by density in addition to type (cattle, dairy, hogs, broilers, layers). It also shows the density of factory farms and locates meat plants.
- Farmers Markets Seasonal Ingredients Map by Epicurious, organized by month and state
- Grown In the City – From DIY projects to guerrilla gardens to urban food policy, community gardens, farmer’s markets and balcony gardens, Grown in the City covers everything you need to know about food grown in the city. See three interactive maps that track food sovereignty, urban ag zoning, and food policy council information
- LocalHarvest.org has an interactive map that can find farms, CSAs, farmers’ markets, restaurants, grocery stores/co-ops, and online stores according to location
- Market Maker, a comprehensive interactive data base of food industry marketing and business data developed by the University of Illinois
- Serve Your Country Food – a map by the Greenhorns, a young farmer networking organization. The map farmer data including land ownership, languages spoken, and bicycle ownership
- The Long Island Index interactive map displays Long Island’s latest land use patterns including agricultural uses
